The Spanish-language media reports on the latest attack on constitutional rights, targeting children of immigrants, and what can be expected from the 112th Congress.
News agency EFE reports on yesterday’s press conference at which conservative state legislators announced a new campaign to deny U.S citizenship to children of undocumented immigrants.
Univisión also reports on the press conference on its website and national newscast.
“Is the New 112th Congress Anti-Immigrant?”
On its national newscast, Telemundo interviews former Florida Senator Mel Martinez on whether or not he believes that new Congress will be “anti-immigrant.” Martinez says that he doesn’t believe that this new Congress will create laws against Hispanics, because he believes that the Republican agenda is not an “anti-Hispanic agenda.” Instead, Martinez asserts that he believes that Republicans will come up with new ideas for ways to solve the immigration problem, and eventually come up with a bipartisan solution.
Marco Rubio Watch
A local Telemundo station in Florida interviews Marco Rubio about his top priorities in the new Congress. When asked whether or not he would vote on the DREAM Act or on immigration reform if it were to come up for a vote, Rubio states that only once the border is “secured” and there is an employee verification system is in place would he consider an overhaul of the immigration system that would include a way to help those young people that were brought here by their parents.
El Nuevo Herald also quotes Rubio on the topic:
“I believe that we must modernize our immigration laws […] I believe that we must explore the idea of accommodating the young people who were brought to this country by their parents [. . .] They have so much to contribute to the country”.
In other news…EFE reports on Rhode Island Governor Lincoln D. Chafee’s decision to repeal an executive order on E-Verify.
